Planting Plan: Fire-Wise Mediterranean Hillside Design
Perched in the hills outside Vacaville, this secluded property sits at the end of a long driveway with sweeping views and a deep sense of quiet. The planting design had several distinct goals: create a sense of arrival at the entry, frame and preserve the views rather than compete with them, and give different areas of the large property their own character while keeping the overall palette cohesive. The poolside garden called for a softer, more refined feel, a contrast to the naturalistic plantings elsewhere on the property but connected through a shared color story. The client had a love of lavender and specific colors, and the palette was built around those preferences, bringing continuity from the entry all the way out to the hillside edges. Drought-tolerant and fire-wise species were selected throughout, chosen to thrive in the climate and blend naturally into the surrounding landscape. The result is a property that feels like several distinct spaces, each with its own mood and purpose, tied together by a planting palette that belongs to this land.
